Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside where the scene is reproduced inverted thus upside down and reversed left to right but with color and perspective preserved. Drawing upside down is a favorite method of mine because it trains your eyes to really see you examine the length of a line the curve in a line and distances from other lines it s an excellent practice to perform. For left handers with a horizonal image and a blank sheet of paper they can move sideways this would be the set up. Drawing upside down helps activate the right brain mode.

In order to produce a reasonably clear projected image the aperture has to be about 1 100th. This is also how you would use an envelope in conjunction with a horizontal image. There are many ways to master the art of drawing. Upside down and you are drawing it upside down but it is being revealed from side to side.
